Published date: 16 December 2022 20:51 UTC | Last update: 1 week 3 days agoEgyptians have taken to social media, calling for comedian Kevin Hartâs debut show in the country to be cancelled over his past comments in support of Afrocentrism on Ancient Egypt.
The amusing stand-up comedian and movie star is scheduled to do a stand-up show in Cairo in February.
A hashtag calling for Hartâs show to be cancelled or boycotted has become one of the top trending topics on social media in Egypt over the past few days.
One Twitter user said Afrocentrists âwant to steal and attribute Egyptâs civilization to Africans and tell modern Egyptians that we are occupying Egypt from them. We must all participate in the campaign to cancel Kevinâs concert.â
Hart, a popular US comedian, is a proponent of Afrocentrism, which advocates examining history through a lens that focuses on the role of Black Africans. Some followers say modern Egyptians have no claim to the countryâs ancient history because they are the descendants of Arab invaders.

You arenât welcome to Egypt. Egyptians arenât africans. Weâre the real builders of the civilization,no one else. The afrocentric is just a lie.Theyâre liars. Egypt is our land not the africans.â Monya ehab (@Monyaehab1) December 13, 2022
⌠Hartâs critics from across Egypt have noted an interview the comedian gave where they say he claimed Africans were the kings of Egypt.
âWe must teach our children the true history of Black Africans when they were kings in Egypt and not just the era of slavery that is cemented by education in America. Do you remember the time when we were kings?â
The remark has been slammed on Twitter. One user said: âYou arenât welcome to Egypt. Egyptians arenât Africans. Weâre the real builders of the civilization, no one else.â
âThe Afrocentric is just a lie. Theyâre liars. Egypt is our land not the Africans.â
My guess is that hotep-types who are into Afrocentrist theories of ancient Egypt tend to be guys whoâd be conservatives if they were white. Kevin Hart, the 5â2.5âł comic whirlwind, seems like a good guy.
One thing to keep in mind about northeastern Africa is that there arenât as sharp racial borders going up the Nile as in northwestern Africa, where the nearly empty Sahara strongly divides olive-skinned Berbers from black sub-Saharans. So, races are more clinal in the northeastern quarter of Africa and more discontinuous in the northwestern quarter.
For example, a few years ago, geneticist David Reich of Harvard did DNA scans on bones from Egypt 2000 years ago during Roman rule and found about 8% sub-Saharan ancestry. Is that a lot or a little? Itâs kind of in-between.
The sub-Saharan component was likely even lower 4500 years ago when the Great Pyramid was constructed (getting across the Sahara, even following the Nile, or sailing in the Indian Ocean) was harder the further back you go, but I donât yet know that for sure yet.
